 FAQs

  • While there is overlap in definitions, Functional Psychiatry prioritizes identifying and treating root causes of conditions rather than merely treating symptoms. Integrative Psychiatry combines multiple therapeutic modalities to create a comprehensive treatment plan.

  • While advances in neuroscience are fascinating and have allowed for a better understanding of the brain, they cannot alone fully explain the mind and the human person. Most psychiatrists were trained under a biological and pharmaceutical model which has shortcomings. Most psychiatrists do not receive deep education in exercise, nutrition, philosophy, psychotherapy, and root-cause medicine. As such, many patients and families perceive they will be offered only medications to address issues that are more complex and multi-factorial. Additionally, studies have shown that there is a disproportionate ideological bias among specialists in this field that does not reflect the general population. Subsequently, many patients and families do not know if their physician will fully understand them or even respect their beliefs. We are here to bridge these gaps.

  • Dr. Monsalve has received multiple national and international awards for his research and contributions to the field. In addition to various medical conferences in the U.S.A, he has presented his work internationally in Austria, Brazil, and Mexico. He has presented throughout the world on medical ethics and the development of clinical guidelines. In particular, he has educated physicians in several countries on how to determine if the guidelines they follow reflect the highest quality available evidence. Through this, he has established relationships and received mentorship from international experts. As such, he is able to draw on the best of domestic and international medical guidelines in order to better serve patients. He makes every effort to adhere to treatment guidelines and standards of care that have the highest level of scientific integrity.

His robust medical training allowed him to treat every major condition in his specialty. He has served patients across every strata of society including, but not limited to scientists, physicians, homemakers, executives, recent immigrants, the homeless, the incarcerated, and other professionals.

In addition to his Medical Doctorate (M.D.) and residency training at one of the premier biomedical research institutions in the country, a significant influence in Dr. Monsalve’s formation was the decision to major in philosophy during his undergraduate studies. There he was exposed to a wide range of thinkers across ancient, medieval, modern, and contemporary philosophy and learned to more deeply consider concepts such as truth, goodness, and beauty. He was encouraged to be more attentive to what constitutes and contributes to authentic human flourishing and discern the role of virtues in that pursuit. He learned to ask: what is the meaning of suffering, if any? He learned to appreciate a rich debate, not for the sake of winning, but rather, to get at the truth of the matter. This broad education allows Dr. Monsalve to offer patients a breadth of perspectives to questions that cannot be answered by a purely biological lens. His philosophy background allows him to be a better critical thinker regarding the scientific literature.

Dr. Monsalve is a husband and a father. He is committed to treating every patient with the highest and most truthful integrity.
